FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Storing Before Your Vasectomy
How effective is a vasectomy?
Vasectomy is one of the most effective forms of permanent birth control, with a success rate approaching nearly 100% in preventing pregnancy once post-operative testing confirms the absence of sperm (azoospermia). It is performed as a minimally invasive outpatient procedure and carries a low risk of complications or side effects. In addition to its high effectiveness and safety profile, vasectomy is also a cost-effective option compared to permanent female sterilization methods, such as tubal ligation, which typically involve more complex surgery and higher costs. For individuals or couples seeking reliable, long-term contraception, vasectomy offers a proven and efficient solution.
What is a vasectomy reversal and is it effective?
Vasectomy reversal—technically known as vasovasostomy—is generally effective in restoring male fertility, though success is not guaranteed. The effectiveness of the procedure depends on several factors, including time since the original vasectomy, the surgical technique used, and individual health conditions. Success is typically measured by the return of sperm to the ejaculate and the ability to achieve a natural pregnancy. Patency rates (the presence of sperm in semen post-reversal) range from 60% to over 90%, particularly when the reversal is performed within a few years of the vasectomy. Pregnancy rates are somewhat lower and depend heavily on both partners' reproductive health. While outcomes can vary, vasectomy reversal remains a viable option for many men who wish to regain their fertility after a vasectomy.
How accurate is a sperm test after a Vasectomy?
Post-vasectomy semen analysis (PVSA) is highly accurate when performed correctly, with a success rate typically exceeding 99% in confirming the absence or near absence of sperm in the ejaculate. This test is the gold standard for verifying the effectiveness of a vasectomy. The goal of PVSA is to detect azoospermia (no sperm present) or very low levels of non-motile sperm, both of which indicate a successful procedure. However, for optimal accuracy, it is essential to follow post-operative instructions carefully—including proper sample collection and testing at the appropriate time. Following these guidelines helps ensure reliable results and minimizes the risk of false reassurance.
how long does it take to get sperm test results after vasectomy?
With CryoChoice, sperm test results after a vasectomy are typically available within 24-48 hours of the lab receiving the sample. The process involves ordering a kit, collecting a sample, and shipping it back to the lab with pre-paid overnight shipping. Please note that it is recommended to test at an appropriate time, typically around three months after the vasectomy and after at least 20 ejaculations.
When should I freeze my sperm before vasectomy?
It is best to freeze your sperm as soon as possible after scheduling your vasectomy, and ideally before the procedure takes place. Freezing sperm in advance ensures that you have viable reproductive options in the future, especially if you later decide you want to have children. Once a vasectomy is performed, sperm are no longer present in the ejaculate, and retrieving them later requires surgical intervention. By freezing sperm beforehand, you can preserve your fertility easily and effectively, providing peace of mind and flexibility for future family planning.
When should I test my semen after a vasectomy?
Semen testing after a vasectomy should be performed 8 to 12 weeks post-procedure, following a minimum of 15 to 20 ejaculations. This timeline allows adequate time for any remaining sperm to be cleared from the vas deferens, significantly reducing the risk of a false negative test result. Until a post-vasectomy semen analysis (PVSA) confirms the absence of sperm—either no sperm or only non-motile sperm below a defined threshold—alternative contraception should be used to prevent unintended pregnancy. Following this guideline ensures accurate results and confirms the long-term success of the vasectomy.
What happens if I decide I no longer want to store my sperm?
Simply notify us through email or over the phone that you're ready to terminate your account. You'll need to do this 60 days before your renewal. We require a notarized form terminating your account since it's your biological material at a FDA regulated lab. Once we receive that form, your account will be terminated.
When is the fastest that I can get a collection kit?
We can offer kits next day Monday - Friday and they can be sent in to our lab Monday - Thursdays.
What is your return policy?
Unused Kits– Within fifteen (15) days from purchase and before your sample has been processed, you may request a refund. All monies paid will be refunded minus a $75 Kit Fee (per kit) and shipping charges.
How much sperm should I store?
All samples are stored in 1.5mL vials. The number of vials per sample depends on the amount of sperm produced in the sample. The average is around 2-3 vials. Most fertility procedures use between 1-3 vials per fertility attempt, and it could take multiple attempts to produce a pregnancy. Multiple samples are generally chosen by our clients to optimize their chances of parenthood. Multiple kit discounts are available.
How long does it take to freeze sperm? Do I have time to do it before my vasectomy?
Yes, freezing sperm before a vasectomy is a relatively quick and straightforward process—and in most cases, there is plenty of time to complete it before your procedure. The actual sperm freezing takes only a few hours, while the entire process, including semen collection, laboratory analysis, and preparation for long-term storage, can typically be completed within a few days.
For individuals planning a vasectomy but wanting to preserve fertility, scheduling sperm banking in advance ensures a secure, convenient option for potential future use. Cryopreservation before vasectomy is strongly recommended if there's any chance you may want biological children later on.
