Every vial will be equalized and we will store everything that you collect. Whether you’re gearing up for IUI or IVF down the road, you'll need around 1-3 vials per attempt. Remember, every collection can vary in both volume and vitality. One collection kit will be a good start. Our top tip? What Our Standard Sperm Analysis Measures (Included With Each Kit Order)

Volume

Volume, also known as semen volume, is the amount of semen produced during ejaculation. It's usually between 1.5 and 5 milliliters, or about ¼ to 1 teaspoon, per ejaculation. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) says that semen volume can range from 0.8 to 7.6 milliliters, with an average of 1–5 milliliters.

Total Motile Count

This is the number of moving sperm in the entire ejaculate. It is calculated by multiplying the volume by the concentration (million sperm/ml) by the motility (% moving). There should be more than 20 million motile sperm in the ejaculate.

Concentration

Sperm concentration is also known as the density of the sperm. Number of sperms may vary from 10 million/ml to more than 200 million/ml or 39 million per ejaculate volume.

Motility

Motility is a measure of how well your sperm are swimming, at least 40% should be motile, or moving.

What's the difference between a standard and enhanced sperm analysis?

When you opt for an enhanced sperm analysis, you can include a sperm morphology test to the other parameters measured: volume, total motile count, concentration, and motility. Understanding sperm morphology is essential for cryopreservation and future fertility treatments. Why does sperm morphology matter? Sperm morphology, which refers to the size and shape of sperm, is crucial because it affects the sperm's ability to swim properly and fertilize an egg.

How soon can I receive my kit?

All orders ship via FedEx Priority Overnight.  We ship this way due to time and temperature restrictions on the sperm preservative included inside of your kit, therefore it is imperative that you open and refrigerate your sperm preservative immediately upon receipt of your kit. In order to receive Saturday shipping, your order must be placed before 4:00 PM EST on Friday. 

Where will my sperm be frozen?

CryoChoice uses FDA-registered, CLIA-certified cryopreservation laboratories in the United States. All sperm samples are frozen and stored in state-of-the-art cryogenic tanks using liquid nitrogen vapor. Facilities are equipped with 24/7 temperature monitoring, dual alarm systems, and backup generators to ensure uninterrupted protection of your sample.

This ensures your sperm is preserved in compliance with industry-leading sperm storage and fertility preservation standards.

How long does sperm stay viable while frozen?

Frozen sperm can remain viable for decades, even up to 20 or 30 years, when stored under proper conditions. Studies and successful births have shown that sperm cryopreserved for over 20 years can still lead to healthy pregnancies. The key is storing your sperm in a professional, long-term cryogenic facility with strict temperature control and backup systems.

At CryoChoice, sperm is preserved in liquid nitrogen at -196°C to ensure maximum viability for short- or long-term fertility preservation.

Is a blood test required?

Infectious disease testing is not required to store your sample; however, it is recommended so you can use your sample in the future. Most fertility clinics require infectious disease testing to be completed within 60+/- days of your last collection.

What is the cancellation policy?

Within seven (7) days of your sample being processed, you may request a refund if your sample is not viable for storage. All monies paid will be refunded minus a $199 lab processing fee, a $75 kit fee (per kit) and shipping charges.

How do I retrieve my sample?

If you ever wish to retrieve your sample(s), simply contact CryoChoice. We will send you a Withdrawal Form to begin the process. Our CryoChoice Fertility Logistics Specialist will coordinate with your Fertility Clinic to arrange the logistics.  A shipping and release fee will be assessed, and your sample will be prepared within 4 weeks of your request.

Your account must be in good standing and all shipping and release fees must be paid in full prior to your sample being released. These shipping and release costs include retrieving your sample(s), preparing the vial(s) for shipping, filling the cryogenic shipping tank with liquid nitrogen coolant, delivering your sample to the requested facility within the United States and returning the cryogenic shipping tank back to our lab.  

How much sperm should I store?

All samples are stored in 1mL vials.  The number of vials per sample depends on the amount of sperm produced in the sample. The average is around 3 vials. Most fertility procedures use between 1-3 vials per fertility attempt, and it could take multiple attempts to produce a pregnancy. Multiple samples are generally chosen by our clients to optimize their chances of parenthood. Multiple kit discounts are available.  

Does freezing sperm damage or affect the quality of my sperm?

While the freezing and thawing process may reduce sperm motility slightly, most samples retain a high number of viable, healthy sperm after thawing. This is why sperm freezing is considered a reliable method of male fertility preservation.

Should I get STI/STD testing before freezing my sperm?

Yes. While STI/STD testing is not always required, it is highly recommended before freezing sperm. Testing helps ensure the safety of sperm handling and storage, particularly if the sample will be used for assisted reproduction (like IVF or IUI). Some fertility clinics may require these test results before accepting a specimen for treatment.
